The body of the Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili who tragically died on 12 February was flown to Georgia. Kumaritashvili was killed in a horrible accident that took place on bobsleigh track in Whistler a few hours before the Olympic Games opening ceremony. The athlete couldn’t manage to pass the last 270-degree turning, lost control at speed 145 kilometers per hour and
slammed into one of the track-side steel poles. Kumaritashvili received severe injuries and died in a Whistler hospital.
Nodar Kumaritashvili who participated in five major international competitions was 44 th in the world bobsleigh rating. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games included a silence minute to honour the memory of Kumaritashvili.
Kumaritashvili is to be buried in Bakuriani where the government plans to construct sports and bobsleigh site named after the deceased athlete.
